Unusual 19th Century Painted Mahogany Chest on Chest / Tallboy
The Upper Section with a Moulded, Dentil Cornice and fitted with an arrangement on two short over three long drawers, each with painted foliate detail.
The cornice features The Green Man centrally, flanked to each side with foliate swags, and capped to each side with painted masks, the left symbolising Sol 'The Sun', and the right featuring Luna 'The Moon'.
Below the cornice, the two short drawers are painted with a pair of opposing dragons, either side of the turned handles, each of which featuring turned 'button' details, The Long drawers are again painted, but each feature four birds, some of which are named, such as 'Bobby', 'Cuckoo' & 'Pretty Polly', standing on the scrolling painted details, which stem from the central details.
Flanking either side of the drawers, the recessed, flattened edges of the chest, showcase a central painted stem, with with small leaves along each side.
The bottom section, again with a moulded cornice, featuring pinstripe carving, is fitted with an arrangement of two short over two long drawers, the short drawers replicating those of the top section, showcasing again a pair of opposing dragons to each, the long drawers however, although similar to the upper section, differ slightly. The centre of each drawer with the scrolling detail and acanthus leaves, and painted with various flowers, such as the 'Dandelion', and all raised on four block feet, the shaped fronts carved with a single scroll.
This level of decorative painting can be seen to simulate that of the Inlay seen on Sheraton Satinwood furniture.
