Tadeusz Was
Biography
Tadeusz was born in Zerow, Poland in 1912 and studied in Krakow, specialising in mural painting and stained glass. In some of his works, his wartime experiences can be seen as he incorporates them into his sketches and paintings. These experiences though only featured in his smaller pieces.
He was taken by enemy forces during the war, causing him to be sent to a Prisoner Of War camp, which he later escaped from. Upon his escape, he joined and became a Middle East Land Forces operative. He served in Italy until the end of the war, after which he studied in Rome, winning the Silver Medal at the 1946 International Art Show.
After being demobbed from the Polish Army in 1947, he was sent to a DPP Camp in Cheshire, where he discovered that his degree was valid in the UK, he began teaching in the evenings at the Crewe College of Art
